Genetic Testing

To help horse breeders make informed decisions, AQHA offers a five-panel genetic test for HYPP, PSSM, MH, GBED and HERDA.

As a way to help breeders make good decisions regarding their horse breeding program, AQHA offers a five-panel test to determine if an American Quarter Horse is a carrier or has any of five genetic diseases.

The five-panel genetic test covers:

  • glycogen branching enzyme deficiency (GBED)
  • hereditary equine regional dermal asthenia (HERDA)
  • hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (HYPP)
  • malignant hyperthermia (MH)
  • polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM)

The effects of these equine diseases are wide-ranging, from mild and manageable to severe and terminal. Passing these diseases on to successive generations often causes unnecessary suffering and also leads to financial losses for horse breeders.

Panel Test Process

After you order the test through AQHA, AQHA will mail you a DNA kit.

Once you receive your kit, mail it with your horse's mane and/or tail hair to the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at the University of California-Davis for testing.

When the tests are complete at U.C. Davis, AQHA will notify you and update your horse's records with the results.

Panel Test Costs

  • $85 for AQHA members
  • $125 for nonmembers
  • Panel test in conjunction with the DNA test required for most breeding stock: $105 for members and $145 for nonmembers
