Sculptor honored with 2012 Steel Dust Award.

The fifth annual America’s Horse in Art Show & Sale opened August 11 at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in the Scharbauer Gallery. The show and sale features more than 30 world-renowned Western artists’ work, which include paints, watercolors, graphite sketches and sculptures. But, only one of the artist’s collections was selected for the annual Steel Dust Award. Sculptor Rick Jackson was this year’s winner. The Steel Dust Award is sponsored by Bruce Carter Performance Horses.

This marks the second year for this prestigious award designed to recognize an artist for superior, quality work. Selected by a panel of judges, the award is based on the artistic merit of the entire body of work submitted to the show. Jackson has been a participant in America’s Horse in Art since its inception and has three pieces available for purchase in this year’s show.

Jackson has been sculpting for 30 years on a self-described learning curve. Other than his participation in a limited number of workshops and his endeavor to understand human and animal anatomy, he is self-taught. “I’ve been trying to learn how to sculpt horses for 32 years and to have the AQHA to finally tell me that I know how to sculpt horses is a big accomplishment,” said Jackson.

In addition to being honored with the award, Jackson received a check for $1,000 from the Hall of Fame.

America’s Horse in Art Show & Sale will remain on display at through November 10. If you can’t make it to the museum to see Jackson’s and all participating artists’ work, go to www.quarterhorsemuseum.com.
