AQHA is sponsoring the 2014 Horsemen’s Re-Union, a colt-starting event April 8-13 in Paso Robles, California, produced by Rowly and Cathie Twisselman.
The six-day event features horsemen and -women from the United States, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Argentina, Israel and Spain who will start two colts apiece. The colts will be sold on the fifth day, and on the sixth day, the new owners will get a one-on-one session with the trainers, to help set them up for success with their colts.
The event is not judged, but is intended to let audience members see how top horsemen would start colts without time constraints. Unlike any other event, the Horsemen’s Re-Union will host more top horsemen, more horses and a longer period of time for spectators to witness the transformation from an unstarted colt to a horse ready to go do a job on the ranch.
The colt-starters are: David Alonso, Brad Andrews, Jennifer Black, Martin Black, Trevor Carter, Jonathan Field, Frank Green, Rick Hansen, Shamus Haws, Mary Kitzmiller, Buster McLaury, Shlomik Raziel, Thomas B. Saunders, Cristobal Scarpati, Oscar Scarpati Schmid, Buddy Uldrikson, Juan A. Vendrell, Ron Wall and Clayton Edsall.
As an added twist year, the Twisselmans have added a “So you wanna be a horseman?” contest that will allow two additional horsemen or -women to participate in the event. In this “American Idol”-style competition, eight trainers have put themselves on stage. On the Horsemen’s Re-Union Facebook page, fans can now vote on who they’d like to see at the event. The popular vote will narrow the field to four, and the producers will have the final say on which two will win the nod.
The horses for the event are from the Twisselmans’ Madonna Inn Quarter Horses in Santa Margarita, California, an AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder.
The Twisselmans’ colts include 2- and 3-year-old sons and daughters of Athenolena by Doc O’Lena; Texas Playgun by Playgun; RF Doolin Leo by Prices Smokey Leo; Twissolena by Lenas May Day; and the Thoroughbred Barrossab.
Madonna Inn Quarter Horses have been found in a variety of arenas, from rodeo to jumping and just about everything in between. As an added bonus this year, many of the horsemen will be offering demonstrations that illustrate how to help a green horse gain experience in specific areas, including jumping, cattle work and team roping. Emcee Bobby Ingersoll, a legendary hackamore horseman, will offer a demonstration on the correct usage of a hackamore.
