Quarter Horses returned to Fort Erie on Saturday to showcase some of the fastest horses in Ontario racing. Silver Grill won the Fort Erie Bank of America Supplemental Challenge. The $35,000 added event for AQHA Racing Challenge enrolled horses was the longest race on Saturday’s program at 870 yards.
Silver Grill, a gray 6-year-old who last ran and won a 440-yard race here at Fort Erie during the July Friendship Festival of Racing defeated First Step Away by 1 ½ lengths. Jess Fischin was another neck back in third.
Jockey Tony Phillips took the lead at the head of the lane and brought the horse home to win. “My horse tired, but I picked him up and he held on,” said Phillips. Trainer Barry Woods, who won the 870-yard Battle of the Breeds here last October with Silver Grill, was relieved. “I was concerned about the distance, he hasn’t had a race in over two months, but what he won on today was all heart.”
He completed the course in :47.190 seconds to earn the winner's purse of $18,750 and push his earnings mark to $82,471. Silver Grill, a Hawkinson gelding out of the Takin On The Cash mare Takin On The Green is owned by Double Mac Racing. Bred in California by Steve D. Burns, DVM, he returned $4.80 to win.
Clinton Crawford owns and trains First Step Away, an 8-year-old First Down Dash gelding out of the Thoroughbred mare Cassie's Promise, by Au Point. Ridden by Helen Vanek he earned $8,200.
Jess Fischin earned $4,100 for owner MLP "From The Inside", Inc. The Feature Mr Jess 4-year-old is trained by Lee Baker and ridden by Marty Mercieca.
Nofearoffailure, First Down Planetary and Rs Coal completed the field.
Live Quarter Horse racing actions continues on Saturday, October 15th and 22nd with a number of special events and promotions taking place including a Tiki Bar Hoedown Party featuring line dancing, roping demonstrations, handicapping contests and much more.
