The well-traveled T Gold J made his Los Alamitos debut a winning one as the colt by Gold Medal Jess captured the $200,000 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship (G1) by three-quarters of a length. Rodrigo Aceves rode the Oklahoma-bred to a 400-yard clocking of :19.595 for conditioner Adan Farias.
Sent off at odds of 8-1, T Gold J picked up his fourth straight victory and the richest of his career by far. Bred and owned by Manny Silva of Rockton, Illinois, T Gold J has raced at seven different racetracks, from Florida to the Midwest and now Southern California. The colt punched his ticket to Los Alamitos by winning the Adequan Prairie Meadows Derby Challenge (G3) in Iowa, and his win streak also includes a victory at Fairmount Park in Illinois.
“This horse is outstanding,” said Farias, who also won the John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship (G2) with Illegal Smile in a dead heat. “I've only had him for six weeks, but I knew right away we had a very good horse. The owner, Manny Silva, called me up and asked me if I wanted to train him for the Challenge. I had seen the form on the horse, and that he had won his last three races. To win by that margin in a Grade 1 race is very impressive. Rodrigo told me this horse would surprise us, and he did.”
The victory, which was the sixth in 18 trips to the post for T Gold J, pushed his earnings to $158,219. T Gold J is out of the Dash For Cash mare Turns To Cash.
Tremor Enterprises LLC’s Feature Honor, a shipper from Ruidoso Downs, took the runner-up spot, and Lajolla Famosa, who campaigned mostly in Idaho and Wyoming, took third for owners Gary and Jeralyn Messenger.
Rockin, Touch of Paso, Classic Blush, Aquafina, Thirds Blue Legend, Throwin Fits and Differently rounded out the order of finish.
