Outrunning his 16-1 odds, Yin Your Eyes scored a game victory in the $125,000 Red Cell Distance Challenge Championship (G1) by a nose over 8-1 shot Regal Colors. The Washington-bred gelding closed well and prevailed despite trouble to stop the timer at :45.639 for 870 yards.
"He's a very nice horse,” said winning rider J.L. Torres. “I had a little trouble on the turn; the one horse pushed me out a little, but he came smoking at the end."
Yin Your Eyes is a 4-year-old son of Eye Yin You out of the winning Snowbound (TB) mare Apollo Snowbound. Trainer Bill Hoburg bred the gelding in partnership with D. Canfield.
"I am so thankful,” said owner Rene Laatsch of Kennewick, Washington. “This horse means the whole world to me. He was given to me as a gift. He has a wonderful pedigree and Bill told me that the last race was a tune-up and we would do well today. He sure did!"
Despite his long odds, Yin Your Eyes came into the race with plenty of experience around the turn, including five straight wins at 770 and 870 yards earlier this year in Washington and Idaho. The last of those victories came in the July 23 Red Cell Sandy Downs Distance Challenge in Idaho to earn him a berth in the Challenge Championships. Yin Your Eyes made just one start after that, a fourth-place finish in the Red Cell Turf Paradise Distance Challenge on October 16.
Yin Your Eyes earned $60,000 for his 11th win in 23 career starts and boosted his bankroll to $102,824.
Stan Young’s Regal Colors, who defeated Yin Your Eyes at Turf Paradise, had the lead for much of the race and held on for second. Dark Horse Partnership’s Kite Flyer, who qualified for the race at Lone Star Park in Texas, crossed the wire third.
Hez Our Rock, 2-5 favorite Docs Dusty Okie, Apollos First Down and Checotah Dale completed the order of finish.
