The 2011 All American Futurity (G1) is racing’s richest race for 2-year-olds, regardless of breed. Run every Labor Day at Ruidoso Downs in the mountain village of Ruidoso, New Mexico, the $2.4 million-est. race will be contested September 5 by 10 2-year-old American Quarter Horses. The estimated $1.2 million for first place would be a record prize in the sport. This year, the $1.2 million-est. All American Derby (G1) for 3-year-olds is September 4.

The 440-yard race will be September 5, and the estimated $1.2 million for first place would be a record prize in the sport. The time trials for the race are August 18. The All American Futurity was first run in 1959, with a purse of $129,686. It was won by Hugh Huntley’s filly Galobar, who was trained by Newt Keck and ridden by Cliff Lambert. In 1978, the All American became the first horse race in history to offer a million dollar purse and was won by Moon Lark. In 1982, the race’s purse was upped to a $2 million, with $1 million going to winner Mr Master Bug.The All American Derby was first run in 1974. This year, the $1.2 million-est. All American Derby (G1) is September 4. The trials for the race are August 19.

In 2010, 22-1 longshot Mr Piloto won a blanket finish in the All American Futurity presented by Sentient Jet, taking the lead on the final stride and defeating 2-1 favorite JLS Mr Bigtime by a narrow nose. Dominyun was another nose back in third, and was followed by Make Me Fly in fourth. Less than half a length separated the top four finishers. The All American Derby (G1) was won by Double Down Special, who defeated eventual world champion Apollitical Jess by a neck. Double Down Special went on to be voted the 2010 champion 3-year-old gelding. Races from Ruidoso Downs, including the All American trials and finals, can be seen for free on Q-Racing Video.
