Race record: Finishing third to Bon Accord and Wicked Courage in the ninth trial, Wonder Boy clocked the fourth-fastest time of :21.204. Wonderboy broke his maiden in July 2012 at Ruidoso, but has not won in eight races since and has only one second-place and one third-place finish in four races this year.

Breeder: Wonderboy is bred by the Elk City, Oklahoma-based partnership of Newcomb Cattle Co. and Micah Leslie. Since 2004, the partnership has been represented by 11 winners and the earners of more than $882,000 from 18 starters, all out of the First Down Dash mare First Place Queen. Among them are two stakes winners, including Texas Classic Futurity (G1) winner Mr Queens Mystery ($599,381). Newcomb Cattle in its own name has bred six stakes winners, 49 other winners and the earners of more than $1.56 million from 87 starters. Among the stakes winners are Kool Hand Dutch ($100,980, by First N Kool).

Owner: Wonderboy is owned by Jimmy Bagley’s Sunset Well Service of Midland, Texas. Sunset was represented as owner of the winner of the 2009 Rainbow Juvenile Invitational Stakes (R), Kuhl Little Man ($54,838), who also ran in champion Double Down Special’s Ruidoso Derby (G1).

Trainer: Wonderboy is conditioned by Michael D. Chavez, who in four seasons of training has sent out eight winners and the earners of more than $120,000 from 58 starters. Chavez on July 21 was represented by his first stakes winner, Spit Curl Jesse in the TQHA Futurity (R) at the Gillespie County Fair in Fredericksburg, Texas.

Qualifying jockey: Wonderboy is ridden by Roberto Valero, who in six seasons aboard American Quarter Horses has ridden the winners of 69 races and the earners of more than $740,000 from 523 mounts. Valero has won three stakes races in his career, each at Turf Paradise in Phoenix, Arizona.

Pedigree: Wonderboy on 580 winners and the earners of more than $20.5 million from 14 crops raced by Shazoom, who is the sire of champions Shining Sky and Lett Her Zoom. A graded-stakes-winning earner of $178,606, Shazoom is a 20-year-old stallion by champion Takin On The Cash. Shazoom is the sire of 60 stakes winners, including All American Derby fastest qualifier Bon Accord.

Among the mare’s foals are two stakes winners, including Texas Classic Futurity (G1) winner Mr Queens Mystery ($599,381). An earner of $880,869, First Place Queen in 2002 won the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Million Futurity and the Golden State Million Futurity and ran in AB What A Runner’s All American Futurity (G1). First Place Queen is out of 2002 broodmare of the year Illusive Princess, a daughter of Illusivo.
