Race Record: With a convincing 5 3/4-length win in the 24th of 26 trials, Ruidoso Futurity (G1) winner PJ Chick In Black stamped herself the horse to beat while earning fastest qualifier status. The undefeated filly also won the New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland Park.

Breeder: The filly is one of four stakes winners, 14 other winners and the earners of more than $1.39 million from 28 starters bred by Fredda Draper, who also bred Jenuine Joy ($382,230), Hidden Dragon ($165,347) and One And Onea ($77,946). Fredda is the wife of Carl Draper, who developed PJ Chick In Black and sent her out to win the Ruidoso and Spring futurities, and also trained All American Futurity winners DM Shicago and Heartswideopen.

Owners: Dennis “Denny” Bowen is a farrier and lives with Susan Taylor at El Paso, Texas. Her parents, John and Lynn Smith own Jack Smith Farms in Canada. Bowen, Taylor and the Smiths bought PJ Chick In Black for $300,000 prior to the All American trials.

Trainer: PJ Chick In Black is one of three All American qualifiers conditioned by former jockey John Stinebaugh, who also sent out 3rd-fastest qualifier Krash Cartel and 4th-fastest Just Wanna Corona. Stinebaugh began training in 1985 and since then has sent out the winners of 557 of 4,013 races and the earners of more than $9.4 million. Stinebaugh has conditioned the winners of eight Grade 1 races, including champions and All American Derby winners Double Down Special (2010) and The Casanova (1998), and last year’s Texas Class Futurity (G1) winner Sure Shot B.

Qualifying Jockey: Since 2002, Esgar Ramirez has ridden the winners of 998 races and the earners of more than $22 million from 6,471 starts. Ramirez won the 2010 All American Futurity aboard 22-1 longshot Mr Piloto, and rode PJ Chick In Black to score in the April 8 New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) and the June 9 Ruidoso Futurity (G1).

Pedigree: PJ Chick In Black is one of two stakes winners by graded stakes winner Desirio ($256,786), who also sired $101,381-earner Karolina and the earners of more than $1.16 million. Desirio, a 10-year-old son of Strawfly Special, won the 2004 All American Juvenile Invitational (RG3), and in Grade 1 races ran in DM Shicago’s Ruidoso Derby and Gotta Get’s Championship at Sunland Park.

The filly is the first foal out of the winning Corona Cocktail mare Eddie Jym ($48,876).
