With wagering handle up for the fourth year in a row, Arapahoe Park will raise purses on all overnight races and also add an additional 10th race each day starting next Friday, July 19, through the remainder of the season on August 18. Purses for allowance and maiden special weight races will be increased by $1,000 each, and purses for claiming, maiden claiming and trial races will be increased by $500 each.

“With our big field sizes we’ve had a nice increase in handle, and this is a way to give back and reward the horsemen,” Arapahoe Park Plant Manager and Racing Secretary Bill Powers said. “We’ve increased purses and added races each of the last few years, but this is the earliest we’ve increased. We’ve never had field sizes like this.”

Wagering handle is up 8.9 percent through 22 of 39 racing days compared to last year, translating into extra prize money available for horsemen. Purses each day have averaged $93,500. With the additional race and purse increases, daily total purses will average $110,000.

Arapahoe Park’s field sizes have grown this year because of new stables from Nebraska and Arizona. Entries for this weekend’s Friday, Saturday and Sunday cards drew an average of 9.8 horses per race. There have been 8.8 horses entered per race this season.
