Delta Downs will begin its 2012 American Quarter Horse season on Friday night and close out the opening weekend of live racing on Saturday. Post time each night is set for 6:45 p.m. CST.

The 46-day season will run through July 14. After opening weekend, the schedule will switch to a Wednesday through Saturday format. Post times will remain at 6:45 p.m. with the exception of this year’s Triple Crown simulcast dates, May 5, May 19, and June 9, when the live action gets underway at 6:15 p.m.

Race fans are in for a treat on opening weekend as the track will host the $50,000 John Alleman Stakes (RG3) and qualifying trials for this year’s Alabama Futurity on Friday night. Saturday’s action will include the $20,000 Delta Dash stakes and trials for the Louisiana-bred Graduation Stakes.

Other big days of the meet include Friday, May 25 when the track renews the Old South Futurity and the Old South Derby; Saturday, May 26 when the Louisiana Laddie and Louisiana Lassie Futurities will be contested; Saturday, July 7 when Firecracker Futurity and Firecracker Derby are held; and closing night, Saturday, July 14 when another edition of Louisiana Showcase Night takes place with seven stakes races for Louisiana-bred horses including the richest race of the meet, the Lee Berwick Memorial Futurity.

Delta Downs leading horsemen are set to defend their titles this season. Jockey J. R. Ramirez, who captured his first Delta Downs riding title in 2011, and trainer Heath Taylor, who will be gunning for his eighth local crown, will each try to repeat this year. Ana Lilia Alvidrez will also attempt to win another title after taking her first leading owner title in 2011.
