Delta Downs stewards have made the first ruling from the recent positive tests for the drug dermorphin. On Saturday, the stewards gave the maximum sentence allowed to American Quarter Horse trainer Alvin Smith Jr., reports the New Orleans Times-Picayune's NOLA.com. The ruling is for a six-month suspension in conjunction with a positive test on Dashin Forward, who was second in the May 26, $225,337 Louisiana Bred Laddie Futurity (RG2). The purse will be redistributed. “In the opinion of the Board of Stewards, the penalty imposed is insufficient,’’ NOLA.com reports the ruling says. The case has been referred to the state racing commission for further review. Smith is appealing.
