Quarter Horse racing’s all-time leading money earning jockey, G.R. Carter, Jr., is on the verge of yet another career milestone. With the start of the 2012 Remington Park Quarter Horse meet looming less than a month away, G.R. has come within four wins of tying Hall of Fame jockey Danny Cardoza’s career win total of 3337. Cardoza, who has long since retired from the saddle, currently sits in second on the all-time wins list behind rider Alvin “Bubba” Brossette’s total of 3631.

As of February 5, G.R.’s total career wins record stands at a lofty 3333. The native Oklahoman, who will celebrate his 44th birthday on Monday (February 6), is expected to tie and eclipse Cardoza’s mark within the first couple of weeks of the upcoming Remington Park meet that begins on March 2. With only a few upcoming riding engagements at Sunland Park before the start of the meet in Oklahoma City, it is a highly probable that he will surpass the mark at Remington Park.

“When it happens, it will be a great honor,” said Carter. “I have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for Danny (Cardoza), and to be on the verge of being right alongside of him in the all-time standings list is a great thrill for me. I once read something Danny had said concerning the old clique of ‘records were meant to be broken’. Danny was once quoted as saying “records really are meant to be something to be proud of by the individuals that are breaking them.” I really believe that to be the case, as I will be extremely proud of this accomplishment when it occurs. It is just a testament to how fortunate I have been in my career. I am most proud of the fact that I have maintain the longevity in this sport that is allowed me to keep up this relentless pursuit of reaching my goals.”

Cardoza, who is currently the Ranch Manager at JL Ranch in Paicines, California, was nothing short of thrilled that his friend G.R. Carter was on the cusp of joining him in second place, and perhaps passing his total.

“I would like to joke with G.R. and tell him that it is about time”, said Cardoza. “G.R. is a friend of mine, and I occasionally get a chance to go rope calves with him when time permits. He is a great rider, and seriously one of the genuinely good guys in the sport. Winning this many races in a career means that you stayed healthy and focused long enough to reach that high of a mark. I will be watching for when he ties me, and I will be happy for him when he passes me.”
