Jaime Gomez Approaches 1,000 Wins
Leading trainer approaches 1,000 win record.
February 9, 2012
The outstanding Quarter Horse horseman Jaime Gomez, who has saddled a slew of million dollar race winners in his career, is one win shy of becoming the seventh trainer to reach 1,000 Quarter Horse victories at Los Alamitos Race Course.
Gomez would love to reach the milestone victory this week, but if it doesn’t happen in the next couple of racing nights then he could do it in style when he saddles Senor Toby in next Sunday’s Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Championship. A protégé of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, Gomez began his training career in 1992 at Los Alamitos. His first Quarter Horse victory came in that year with Gavilan Canyon and in 1993 he saddled his first stakes winner when Roberto Jimenez’s Beinbetter captured the California Sires Cup Derby with G.R. Carter Jr. in the irons.
Since then, Gomez has won 58 additional stakes races, tying him for 8th all-time at Los Alamitos. His major victories over the years have included the 1996 Los Alamitos Million Futurity with the great Corona Cartel and the Ed Burke Million Futurity and Golden State Million Futurity with Higher Fire in 2005 and the 2006 Golden State Million Futurity with the all-time great Jess You And I. His other major futurity winners include champions Carters Cartel and Secret Card, plus the likes of Make It Anywhere, Sassy Smith, Tac It Like A Man, Chicks Like Us just to mention a few.
