Arizona owner and breeder Marilou Kelly died Monday.
Marilou Kelly, who owned Double JK Ranch at Sonoita, Arizona, died July 7 at age 80. Mrs. Kelly is the all-time leading Quarter Horse owner at Yavapai Downs by earnings.
In partnership with Charles Grannon, Mrs. Kelly raced champion and Grade 1 winner Mars Blackman ($382,531). She also raced stakes winners Rocket On Sound ($186,641), No Scrubs ($179,460), Blue Oyster Cult ($132,824), and other stakes winners Crash Davis, Recycler, Winning Endeavor, High Flyin Rogue, Werewolves Of London, Farris Bueller, Gomez Adams, Mexican Radio, Hungry Like The Wolf, Lunatic Fringe, Lose Yourself and Ebony Eyes.
The breeding, training and racing operation was started in 1979 by Mrs. Kelly’s late husband James. The combined operation was the leading owner in Arizona 14 times and leading breeder 11 times. Her son James was the manager and only employee at the ranch.
Marilou Kelly is survived by children Laura Horween and her husband, Skip; Kathleen Kelly; and James Kelly and wife Staci; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
