Mexico-Bred Champions Crowned

The Mexican QHA celebrates its 2013 racing champions.

Mexican Champion One Famous Episode was also awarded a year-end MQHA award.

The Mexican Quarter Horse Association recognized 2013 year-end winners during a banquet February 28 at the Hipodromo de las Americas in Mexico City.

Betty Berge, AQHA senior manager of international development, was on hand to help present awards.

Dr. Anselmo Aguilar Payan of Culiacan, Mexico, a 10-year breeder of American Quarter Horses, was recognized as top breeder for 2013.

The freshman colt NC Gucci Shoes, owned by Hector Salinas, earned top Mexican-Bred honors, and won the horse trailer given out to the Mexican-bred with the greatest earnings in the year. The Native Cartel colt won the $104,268 Mexico Futurity (R) and crossed the wire first in the $118,760 Garanones Futurity (RG3), but was disqualified to third. He earned $74,760 during the year.

The American-bred Special Exterior was named horse of the year. The 2009 bay mare by Copacorona Special is owned by Nain Hernandez Hernandez. Last year, she won six of eight starts and earned $72,734 of her career $226,366 earnings. She won three stakes last year, including the Campeon de Campenones Classic, Bank of America Hipodromo Championship Challenge and the Inagural Classic – Div. 1. She was also second in the Javier Rosique Palavicini Premio.
