Reigning champion 2-year-old filly PJ Chick In Black is faring well after a trailer accident near Abilene, Texas, on Monday, July 15, but the filly is very doubtful for this Saturday’s $1,055,000 Rainbow Derby (G1), according to co-owner Denny Bowen. The truck driver and the horse's groom were also involved in the accident and sustained bruises and possible fractured ribs.

PJ Chick In Black’s other owners are Susan Taylor and Jack Smith Farms.

The Desirio daughter’s racing future has not been determined. She is also eligible for the $2.8 million-est. All American Derby (G1) on Labor Day weekend and the $1 million-est. Los Alamitos Super Derby (G1) in November.

“She cleaned up her feed last night and her breakfast this morning. She is bright eyed.” Bowen said on Tuesday morning. “She has a couple stitches in her shoulder and skinned up her head. There is no sign on lameness. We’ll be doing a complete body scan, probably today.”

PJ Chick In Black was returning to Ruidoso Downs after receiving hyberbaric oxygen therapy at the Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery Clinic in Weatherford, Texas. The truck-trailer rig hit wet road in a thunderstorm and hydroplaned. The trailer overturned and PJ Chick In Black was upside down for about 30 minutes with her two front legs sticking out through a window. Once the trailer was righted, she walked out, according to Bowen.

The John Stinebaugh-trained filly was returned to ESMS, about 70 miles away.

“We’ll leave her there as long they want her there," Bowen said. "The oxygen treatments she was receiving are also very good for these injuries. She was back in in the chamber this morning.

"For what she went through we are very fortunate," he continued. "She is very smart and has a great disposition. It was a tough day yesterday, but it is better today. We are going to do what is best for her.”

PJ Chick In Black has won nine of 10 starts and earned $629,619. Her only defeat was a troubled sixth-place finish in last year’s All American Futurity (G1) as the 7-10 favorite. She won the Ruidoso Futurity (G1) and the New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2)during her championship season.

Back in March, she won the West Texas Derby (G3) at Sunland Park before coming to Ruidoso Downs. She won her Ruidoso Derby (G1) trial while facing a 28 mph head wind, but then the wind changed to a tail wind and top nine of the 10 Ruidoso Derby qualifiers came from the wind-aided trials.

In her most recent start, she won her Rainbow Derby trial by a neck with the fifth-fastest qualifying time of :21.033 for 440 yards.

PJ Chick In Black was entered in the Rainbow Derby on Monday morning and can be scratched up until one hour before post time on Saturday. If she is scratched, she will receive 10th-place money of $23,737.
