Press Release
January 9, 2013

Remington Park

Nearly $5 million in total stakes purses will be on the line for competition during the upcoming 2013 American Quarter Horse & Mixed-breed Season at Remington Park. A total of 39 stakes races will be conducted with the estimated total value of that schedule at $4.9 million.

The Remington Park season will begin Friday, March 8, and continue for 50 dates, with the conclusion on Sunday, June 2. The first stakes races of the season are the Grade 2, $50,000 Eastex Handicap and the $50,000 Mighty Deck Three Handicap (Oklahoma-breds) on Sunday, March 10.

Once again, the $1 million-est. Heritage Place Futurity (G1) leads the Remington Park stakes schedule. The first million-dollar futurity in 2013 will headline a stellar program on Saturday, June 1. Also on that card: the $250,000 Remington Park Championship (G1); the $275,000-est. Heritage Place Derby (G2); the $75,000 Heritage Place Juvenile Stakes and the $50,000 Junos Request Stakes (G2).

Overall, 23 of the 39 stakes races are graded events. There are 11 Grade 1 affairs, led by the Heritage Place Futurity, the Remington Park Championship and the $100,000 Leo Stakes on Saturday, March 30.

The Paints and Appaloosas have seven Grade 1 events during the season with the Speedhorse Graham Futurity topping that list. There is one Restricted Grade 1 event in the $100,000 Sooner State Stakes on Saturday, May 4.

The Remington Park Championship winner will again be awarded an automatic berth to the prestigious $750,000 Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos in December. The Champion of Champions is the richest race for older Quarter Horses in the world, and annually carries great influence as to which horse is awarded the title as the year’s world champion.

The futurity season gets underway immediately at Remington Park with trials on Opening Weekend for the $325,000-est. Oklahoma Futurity (G2). The trials will be contested on Saturday, March 9, with the final for the historic race conducted on Saturday, March 23. The Oklahoma Futurity is the longest-running futurity in Quarter Horse racing, contested yearly since 1947.

The rich Remington Park Futurity, restricted to eligible Oklahoma-bred 2-year-olds, will hold trials over two nights on Thursday, April 4 and Friday, April 5. The final, worth $720,000 in 2012, will be run on Saturday, April 20. The Remington Park Futurity, along with the Remington Park Derby (for 3-year-old Oklahoma-breds), annually combine for total worth of a million dollars.

The trials for the Heritage Place Futurity will be held Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11.

Remington Park will also host a group of Bank of America Racing Challenge stakes races on Sunday, May 12. The Grade 2, $100,000 Bank of America Oklahoma Challenge Championship is the main event. The Grade 3, $55,000-est. Red Cell Remington Park Distance Challenge and the $50,000-est. Merial Remington Park Distaff Challenge are the main undercard Challenge stakes on Mothers’ Day.

In addition to the Red Cell Remington Park Distance Challenge at 870 yards, the longer running stakes competitors will also get opportunities in the $35,000 SLM Big Daddy Stakes (550 yards) on Saturday, March 16; the Grade 3, $50,000 Paul's Valley Stakes on Sunday, April 7 and the Grade 3, $50,000 Remington Park Distance Handicap on Sunday, June 2.

Support for state-bred runners is plentiful throughout the season as 14 stakes races for Oklahoma-breds will be held. The Remington Park Futurity, Remington Park Derby and Sooner State Stakes are the richest races for the state-breds. The Oklahoma Speedfest program of four Oklahoma-bred stakes races will be held on Sunday, May 26, with the restricted Grade 3, $50,000 Jack Brooks Stakes for 3-year-olds leading the card.

The normal first race time on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays is set for 6pm. Sunday afternoon racing will begin at 1:30pm. Racing on Memorial Day Monday, May 27 will start at 1:30pm. There will be special post times on Saturday, May 4 and Saturday, May 18, to be determined in conjunction with the simulcast of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, respectively. All post times are Central.
