Saturday, May 25, marks the first of six all American Quarter Horse race days at Indiana Downs in Shelbyville, Indiana. The Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana (QHRAI) was contacted last fall by track management and offered additional days of all Quarter Horse racing. QHRAI officials were excited about the opportunity, and after meeting with Brian Elmore, vice president of racing for Indiana Downs owner Centaur Inc., the QHRAI Executive Committee quickly began working with the Quarter Horse Breed Development Advisory Board and track management to create a race program for 2013 that would provide a great racing program for horsemen and that would also fit within the budget.

Featured races on Saturday’s card include two new stake, the Indiana Championship open to 3-year-olds and up that have ever run in the finals of a stakes race in the state of Indiana, and the Leader of the Class Stakes open to 3-year-olds and up that have ever run in the finals of a stakes race in the state of Indiana as a 2-year-old. Both races are $25,000-added with preference given to horses with the highest 2012/2013 earnings.

This Quarter Horse day will also serve as host for trials to Indiana’s second-largest sire stakes races, the Born Runner Classic (R) and the Gordon Mobley Futurity (R). The top 10 fastest qualifiers for each of these stakes will compete on June 8 for the $100,000-added purses.

Other dates for all Quarter Horse race days at Indiana Downs are June 21, July 6, August 10, September 21 and October 12 and are in addition to the Quarter Horse races that are run at the end of many other race nights. July 6 and October 12 are the two days targeted for special events and celebrations for all horsemen, their families and the many people at Indiana Downs who work so hard to make the race meet a successful one.
