June 11, 2012
Don and Lane Reynolds' Brookstones Chick appears ready to take the next class jump when she starts as the fastest qualifier to the $296,433 Mountain Top New Mexico-bred Futurity (R) on Saturday at Ruidoso Downs.
The 350-yard Mountain Top Futurity is the summer season’s first major test for 2-year-old state-breds.
First post time is 1 p.m. with the Mountain Top Futurity running as the 10th race on the 11-race program. There is always free parking and free general admission at Ruidoso Downs.
The Fred Danley-trained Brookstones Chick has improved with every start. The Brookstone Bay filly ran a lackluster fourth in her career debut before impressing with a 19-1 upset win in her Mountain Top Futurity trial.
Ridden by Bonifacio Perez, Brookstones Chick pulled away to win by 1 1/2 lengths and her time of :17.896 was the quickest mark from eight trials.
Perez is again on Brookstones Chick with the eighth post position.
Robert McGehee’s Junior June Bug consistently performs well against high-level competition. He won his New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) trial in his first start and then was second in the final behind PJ Chick In Black, who proved to be one of the nation’s top juveniles with her win in the $600,000 Ruidoso Futurity (G1) last Saturday.
From the Jackie Riddle barn, Junior June Bug was second in his Mountain Top Futurity trial with the sixth-fastest qualifying time of :18.055.
Junior June Bug has the first post position with Carlos Madeira aboard.
Brad Williams’ Jessiana defeated Junior June Bug in that trial by one-half length in :17.980, the third-fastest qualifying time. The John Bassett-trained Jessiana qualified for the Desert Classic Futurity (R) at Turf Paradise before winning her maiden with her Mountain Top Futurity win.
Regular rider Saul Ramirez Jr. will be aboard Jessiana with the seventh post position.
