The feature race of the weekend at Fair Meadows Tulsa is on Saturday, as a field of nine will compete in the Walter Merrick Memorial Stakes.
Headlining the field is the Rodney Reed-conditioned, two-time distance champion De Passem Okey, an 8-year-old gelding who has 19 wins to his credit at the distance of 870 yards.
Pepperchew, the winner of 2013’s ExpoSquare Stakes at Fair Meadows Tulsa and Eye Can Beatum, who is fresh off a win and a part of the coupled entry for owner Gavin McLane Billins will also be looking to continue their winning ways.
Named after Sayre, Oklahoma, native Walter Merrick, the Walter Merrick Memorial Stakes will be contested at a distance of 870 yards on Saturday, June 14. A purse of $17,500 is up for grabs in the race restricted to Oklahoma-breds. The Memorial Stakes is carded as the 11th of a 12 race program with first post at 6 p.m.
Walter Merrick is to credit for the producing of Lena’s Bar and Easy Jet, the winner of the 1969 running of the All American Futurity. Hall of Famers Jet Deck and Easy Date were also bred by Merrick. Merrick served on the AQHA racing committee and became AQHA Director in 1952. He was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame in 1993.
Fair Meadows 2014 Mixed Breed Season continues Thursday through Sunday, until July 26 with a first post time of 6 p.m. weeknights and 4:05 p.m. on Sundays. There will also be Wednesday evening racing at 6 p.m. on June 18, July 2, and July 23. July 4 will have a special afternoon post time of 1 p.m.
