Two-time champion Noconi added another accomplishment to his résumé on Saturday afternoon when he captured the $50,000 La Plata Stakes (G3) at SunRay Park. The victory marked the 12th career stakes win for the 7-year-old gelding, with each one coming in graded company.
Esgar Ramirez piloted the son of Mr Jess Perry to a 400-yard clocking in :19.561 for trainer Paul Jones and owners R.D. Hubbard and J Bar 7 Ranch LLC. The Oklahoma-bred returned $3.60 as the odds-on favorite and prevailed by a neck in a tight finish with the top six horses separated by less than a length.
Noconi, who was named champion 3-year-old gelding in 2008 and champion aged gelding in 2010, improved his lifetime earnings to $1,335,900 with 15 wins in 33 trips to the post. He has posted three Grade 1 wins in his career, highlighted by the All American Derby at Ruidoso Downs.
Noconi was bred by Hubbard and J. Jones Jr. Int. Ltd. out of the Grade 1-winning Dash For Cash mare My Dashing Lady, who is also the dam of stakes winner Going Separate Ways and Grade 1 winner and champion Brenda Beautiful.
Melvin and Marty Neugebauer’s Unashamed, a stakes winner at Arapahoe Park last year, put in a game effort to finish second. Erasmo Hernandez’s Rare Walker took third.
