Ed Allred’s homebred Check My Thoughts, winner of the Golden State Derby (G1), looks for a second Grade 1 derby victory when he starts as the fastest qualifier to the Southern California Derby (G1) on Sunday night at Los Alamitos.

Check My Thoughts (Check Him Out-Just Think by Pritzi Dash) successfully stepped up to the Grade 1 derby division at Los Alamitos this year with his win in the Golden State Derby, a close third in the Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1) and a third-place run in the Los Alamitos Super Derby (G1).

In the Golden State Derby in August, he jumped to an early lead and then scored the half-length victory in :19.590 for 400 yards.

The Jim Glenn-trained Check My Thoughts earned his way into the Southern California Derby, the final Grade 1 race of the year-long Los Alamitos season, with an easy length win in :19.967 for the 400 yards over a track rated as good. It was the top mark from four trials.

At 2, Check My Thoughts showed his potential with wins in the Golden State Juvenile (R) and the California Breeders Freshman Stakes (R).

Mary and Mark Parsons’ homebred Kobe (Mr Eye Opener-Rubiate by Red (TB)) has the class and figures to move forward for trainer Paul Jones in his second start off a layoff. Early this year, before his eight-month layoff, he made a statement with his game nose win over Deniro in the Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1), a win in the Holiday Handicap and a second in the El Primero Del Ano Derby (G2).

In his Southern California Derby trial, Kobe finished just a nose behind Our Man David (Walk Thru Fire-Secret Goer by Raise A Secret) with the sixth-fastest time of :20.151 while Our Man David raced to the fourth-fastest time of :20.147.

Jose and Gustavo De La Torre’s Last To Check Him (Check Him Out-Last Shall Be First by Strawfly Special) raced to her first win from six 2012 tries in her Southern California Derby trial. She won by a half length, and her time of :19.988 was the second-fastest time.

Last To Check Him, third in the 2011 Los Alamitos Two Million (G1), was one of three Southern California Derby qualifiers from the Jose De La Torre barn. He will also saddle El Primero Del Ano Derby qualifier Our Man David and Golden State Derby qualifier La Corona Cartel (Corona Cartel-Adashin Runaway by Adash For Cash).
