Chicks Smart Money Takes DFC Derby

First Smart Money gelding wins Grade 2 Dash For Cash Derby.

Favorite Jess Lips was not on his game tonight, which cleared the way for Chicks Smart Money to take the winner’s share in the 15th running of the Dash for Cash Derby (G2) on September 29.

Ridden by Cody Jensen, his second stakes win of the night, and trained by Robert Howard Dimitt for owners Joe L. and Judith O. Chappell Trust, the 3-year-old gelding by First Smart Money put in a solid performance for the win, clocking the 440 yards in :21.320. 

The effort was rewarded with a handsome $80,910 winners share of the purse, increasing his lifetime earnings to $151,409 and upping his wins to six from 11 starts. The home bred gelding is out of Beduinos Chick Jet, by Rock Em Smooth.

Evelio Salazar's Fast Prize Mike finished a half-length back for trainer Javier Noel Contreras. The Pyc Paint Your Wagon colt out of Fast Mans Prize, by Heza Fast Man earned $29,589 for the effort. Weetona Stanley bred Fast Prize Mike in Oklahoma. Jarrod Deschamp had the riding assignment.

Lethal Volt, a finalist in last year's Grade 1 All American Futurity, finished third for owner's Dan Adams, P.K. Thomas and Gene White. The gelded son of second crop sire Volcom pushed his earnings to $194,540 with the effort. Thomas bred Lethal Volt in Texas from the Chicks Beduino mare Miss Lethal.

Chicks Smart Money paid $14.00, $5.60, $4.40; second place finisher Fast Prize Mike returned $12.20, $5.80; and Lethal Volt paid $4.60 to show.

Sweet Oblivion, Jess Lips, Jess Fly With Me, Windham and Tw Special Feature completed the order of finish
