Coming off big trial win where she posted the top qualifying time, Chicks Special Angel returned Sunday afternoon to annihilate the field by posting a 2 1/4 length win over Alota Action in the $28,170 Merial Sun Downs Distaff Challenge. Last year's Merial winner Feature Miss Alibi was a neck back in the show position.
Ridden by jockey Hugo Herrera, Chicks Special Angel was much the best as she covered the 400 yards in :19.590 seconds, a 112 speed index. The $12,958 winner's purse boosts her career total to $45,322 with 13 wins in 20 starts. The victory also earned her a starting spot in the $125,000 Merial Distaff Challenge Championship(G1) on Bank of America Challenge Championship night October 18 at Prairie Meadows.
Miguel Sanguino saddled the 6-year-old Chicksspecialmongoose mare for owner Miguel Sanguino. Richard and Fern Wilde bred the sorrel mare in Oregon from the Super Bowl Dash mare CFF Plain Jane.
Also a 6-year-old, Alota Action races for owner John Olmos and trainer Robert Baze. Gorgonio Diaz rod the daughter of Grade 1 sire Quick Action (TB). Bred in California by Stanley Watkins from the Dash Thru Traffic mare Alota Traffic, Alota Action earned $5,634.
Last seasons Sun Downs Merial Distaff winner Feature Miss Alibi earned $2,817 to boos her career total to nearly $30,000. Susan Hadley trains the homebred daughter of Feature Mr Jess for Tony Greaves. Jordan Hadley was aboard the 5-year-old from the Dash Ta Fame mare Alibi Fame.
Completing the field were Ms Eaves, The Streakin Clean, Jus A Rumor, Flyin Lion, Shake Wide Open, Righteous Look and Wild N Sexy.
