Chrysis Wins Lethbridge Maiden Challenge

Corona Cartel filly earns second Maiden Challenge victory.

Bucky and Beverly Stockwell’s Chrysis pulled off the rare feat of winning a second race in the Bank of America Maiden Challenge program as she took the $24,297 Rocky Mountain Turf Club Maiden Challenge on Sunday at Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada. Teagan Oulton rode the Texas-bred to a neck victory with a 350-yard time of :18.10. Beverly Stockwell was also the winning trainer.

Chrysis previously captured the $19,530 Dick Monahan Maiden Challenge at Sun Downs to record her first career victory on May 5. Because Chrysis was still a maiden on April 1 at the time of nomination for the Rocky Mountain Turf Club Maiden Challenge, she was still eligible to compete at Lethbridge. The 4-year-old daughter of Corona Cartel, who was bred by Bobby Cox out of the Grade 3-winning Special Effort mare Special Crys, now has a record of 12-2-3-2 with earnings of $25,367.

Phil Dennis’ homebred Six Hawkin Rockets, the fourth-place finisher in last year’s Canada Cup Futurity (RG3), finished second after breaking her maiden in the trials with a half-length victory over Chrysis. Class Acte, a Shazoom filly running for owner Ralph Danard, took third.
