World Champion Racing Stables LLC and trainer Danny Montes will be well stocked for the $202,100 El Primero Del Ano Derby (G2) for males when they send out fastest-qualifier Dimes And Nicks and third-fastest qualifier Dont Walk Peacefully at Los Alamitos.
Dimes And Nicks (Azoom-Corona Cash by First Down Dash) faces the sternest test of his eight-race career when he tries for his third victory. The gelding made his first start for Montes in his El Primero trial and responded with a three-quarter-length win in :19.608 for the 400 yards, the top mark from three trials.
A son of 1997 All American Futurity (G1) winner Corona Cash, Dimes And Nicks won a Los Alamitos maiden race in his fourth start back in August and raced in the $35,000 Los Alamitos Juvenile (R) on December 15, his start before his El Primero trial score.
Dont Walk Peacefully (Walk Thru Fire-Be Peacefull by Raise A Secret), a half brother to world champion Be A Bono, won his maiden in his second start when he won his El Primero trial by one-half length in :19.709. He was making his return to racing after finishing fourth in a maiden race on August 31.
Ronald Hartley’s Moonist (Separatist-Your First Moon by First Down Dash) could gain favoritism with his consistent stakes record. He won the Los Alamitos Juvenile and the Golden State Juvenile, finished second in the $375,000 Governor’s Cup Futurity (RG2) and fourth in the $196,600 Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1) two starts ago. He came back from the Winter Derby to take his El Primero trial by one-half length after being bumped at the start. The John Cooper-trained gelding recorded the second-fastest qualifying time of :19.656.
