Canterbury Park got in six trials for the Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity completed on Saturday before being forced to cancel the remaining card to inclement weather conditions.

Dreamgirl On Fire used the weather conditions to her favor as she led six qualifiers into the futurity final after the wind switched from a 30 to 40 mph headwind to a 15 mph crosswind in the last of six trials.

The 10 qualifiers will return to the Minnesota racetrack on Saturday, July 6 and vie for the winner's share of a $122,375 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity over 350 yards.

Ridden by Cody Smith Dreamgirl On Fire defeated Painted Storm Cat by a head to get the top qualifying time of :18.262. Jason Olmstead conditions the Walk Thru Fire filly for owner Tom Maher and Summer Run, Inc. It was the first win from three starts this season for the sorrel filly.

"She ran a good race. Looked like everybody's fighting the elements and everything else. It's survival of the fittest today," Olmstead said following the race Saturday.

Bred in Utah by Marla K. Robinson Family Trust, Dreamgirl On Fire is out of the Strawfly Special mare Allamericandreamgirl. She is a half-sister to champion and Grade 1 winner American Runaway ($686,355).

Last year's leading Canterbury Park trainer Stacy Charette-Hill saddled Painted Storm Cat who got the second fastest clocking of :18.282. The homebred son of Red Storm Cat races for Buddy Albin. He is out of the Valiant Hero mare Painted Tears.

Additional qualifiers from the final head were Royal Diamond Cartel, Greyice, Captivating Cara and Thats Lame Sauce Man.

Hill also saddled sixth fastest qualifier Defiant Red Rooster, a PYC Paint Your Wagon gelding who broke his maiden in the first trial by one-length while covering the 350 yards in :18.545. Jorge Torres was aboard the Oklahoma-bred colt that is leased by Randy Hill and Butch and Vicki Hammer from Michael Pohl. Bill Price bred Defiant Red Rooster from the First Down Dash mare Dashing Mariah.

"He's (Defiant Red Rooster) really a nice colt. I thought he was one of my better colts at Remington this year," Hill said. "I really thought this colt was my best colt in the whole deal [Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity Trials]."
