Hialeah Futurity is the richest Quarter Horse race ever at Florida track.

December 30, 2013

The sorrel filly Eagles Magic, owned by Vicente Contreras, trained by Rolando Almanza and ridden by Rodrigo Vallejo, found her best stride late and rallied for a thrilling victory in Sunday's $406,955 Hialeah Futurity, the richest American Quarter Horse race ever contested at Hialeah Park.

The daughter of One Famous Eagle and 1996 world champion-Dashing Folly finished a head in front of JZ Fast Boy, the second-time starter and still-maiden gelding who finished second in the trials to top qualifier JZ Zoomin Cuervo.

Eagles Magic, bred in Texas by Burnett Ranches LLC, covered the classic distance of 440 yards in :21.642 and earned $179,060 for the victory, which upped her lifetime earnings to $188,880.

The victory gave winning trainer Almanza and winning rider Vallejo a sweep of the day's two major stakes races as they had combined on Hialeah Derby winner Dash Master Jess one race earlier.

The tally was the fourth consecutive win on the day for Vallejo, who went on to make it five straight wins when he piloted Dashing Menace to victory in the ninth and final race of the afternoon.

The official running order, including purse earnings, in the 2013 Hialeah Futurity was: Eagles Magic ($179,060), JZ Fast Boy ($73,252), Big Time JP ($48,835), Oldsmobile Hill ($36,626), PYC First Prize Fany ($24,417), Miss Southern DD ($16,278), JZ Zoomin Cuervo ($12,209), Quick Dynasty ($8,139) and Pappasinthehouse ($8,139).

TMF Cash Cartel was scratched, and his absence reduced the purse total from the original $409,250 to $406,955.

In the $227,260 Hialeah Derby, the sorrel gelding Dash Master Jess, a commanding fastest qualifier out of the trials three weeks ago, validated his status with a strong one-length victory over game runner-up Habits Secret.

Owned by Cesar Rosales, trained by Rolando Almanza and ridden by Rodrigo Vallejo, the son of Mr Jess Perry out of Grade 1 winner Dash Master Miss collared Habits Secret in the final 100 yards and withstood a late charge from third-place finisher Joker On Jack, a stakes winner at Hialeah Park last season and the winner of the Refrigerator Handicap (G1) at Lone Star Park in late September.

Dash Master Jess scored for the sixth time this year in his 12th and final start of 2013, stopping the timer in a very fast :21.264 for 440 yards, just .012 of a second short of the track record at Hialeah Park of :21.252 set by Hez Fastforthecash on January 23, 2011.

The winner, bred in Texas by Scarlett Hill Farm Inc., earned $95,449 for his connections and upped his lifetime earnings to $154,725.

The official order of finish, including money won, for the 2013 Hialeah Derby was: Dash Master Jess ($95,449), Habits Secret ($40,907), Joker On Jack ($27,271), I See Visions ($20,454), Hey List ($13,636), Rawhide Creek ($9,090), Panther Speed ($6,818), Stormy Cartel ($4,545), Dreamnwideopen ($4,545) and Scouts Diva ($4,545).
