El Gato Azul Up in NMHA Handicap

Future Trick gelding is up to win NMHA Handicap.

Owned-and-trained by Jesus Carrete, El Gato Azul got up in the final strides to win the $45,000 New Mexico Horseman's Association Handicap at SunRay Park on Sunday afternoon.

Under jockey Enrique Garcia, El Gato Azul benefited from a lack of speed while staying on the rail coming off the turn for home to complete the 870 yard course in :46.331. The $27,000 winner's purse boosted his lifetime mark to (28) 7-3-4 and earnings of $111,577.

Lazy Chili Ranch bred the 6-year-old son of Future Trick from the Devon Lane (TB) mare Deep Creek Lane (TB). He rewarded backers with a $12.60 payoff.

Graded stakes-placed Vicente Y Su Corona finished half-a-length back for owner/breeder Hubaldo Solis. Oscar Carrete conditions the Stel Corona 6-year-old out of Straweberryfast, by Strawflyin Buds. Ridden by Aldo Arboleda, Vicente Y Su Corona earned $9,900 to bring his career total to nearly $140,000. KC Royal Flush eared $4,500 for his third place effort. Jorge Bourdieu rides the Sixes Royal 7-year-old for owner/breeders Kathryn Maynard and Carla Feerer. Wesley T. Giles saddled the sorrel gelding out of Willie May Dash, by Willie Wanta Dash.

Completing the field were Talkin Hills, Storm Chasor and Mighnightlowdown. D E Lover and De Wagons Strawfly were both scratched.
