Salvador Pimienta’s Emperor Valerian comes off an 18-1 upset win in the $56,300 Remington Park Distance Handicap (G3) at 870 yards to meet a full field over 550 yards in the $20,000 Brigand Handicap on Sunday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.

In the Remington Park Distance Championship on June 1, Emperor Valerian (Heza Fash Dash-Sheeza Lil Val by Dashing Val) dueled with Wahoo in the stretch and then pulled out to a one-half length win. That has been his only win from three tries this year.

Emperor Valerian made his only start at 550 yards this year in the $35,000 SLM Big Daddy Stakes at Remington Park and finished second as the lukewarm 7-2 favorite.

Arthur Devereaux’s Arbeka Raincloud (Voghts Gold-Arbeka Bee Quick by Royal Quick Dash) was third behind Emperor Valerian in the SLM Big Daddy in his most recent start. He showed success at 550 yards at Hialeah Park in January when he rolled to a 2 3/4-length victory in a $19,500 allowance race.

Arbeka Raincloud was third in the $30,000 Miami Dade County Stakes over 440 yards in his start after the allowance win.

Wootan Racing’s homebred Big Chop (Jess Louisiana Blue-Annie Eye Over by Mr Eye Opener) returned from a nearly year long layoff to score a second and a third from three starts and could be ready to step up with a win. Before the layoff he won a 550-yard allowance race at Zia Park and was third in the 2013 SLM Big Daddy Stakes.
