Fabulous Ocean Leads Adequan Arapahoe Trials
Grade 3 winner picks up another victory in his first start of the year.
May 25, 2013
Fabulous Ocean picked up right where he left off at Arapahoe Park. After winning the final and richest American Quarter Horse race on closing day last year in the 400-yard, $132,860 Mile High Futurity (G3), he won the first Quarter Horse race on opening day this year and was the fastest qualifier for the 400-yard, $30,000-added Adequan Arapahoe Derby Challenge.
The Hipolito Michel-Valverde-trained Ocean Runaway colt, ridden by Russell Vicchrilli, won the first of Saturday’s two derby trials in :19.730.
The Adequan Arapahoe Derby Challenge final will take place on June 8. The winner of that race will earn a berth to the $200,000 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship (G2) at Los Alamitos Race Course on November 9.
Carters Playmate, who finished a neck behind Fabulous Ocean in the first trial, was the second-fastest qualifier in :19.766. The colt, owned by Junior's Quarter Horses, ridden by Alfredo Luevano and trained by Shae Cox, was making his first start since finishing second in the $109,355 Rocky Mountain Futurity at Arapahoe Park last July. He is by second crop sire Carters Cartel.
Built Tuff Enough, the Rocky Mountain Futurity winner, won the second trial in :19.772 for jockey Zacharie Kelsey and trainer Rudy Ramirez and was the third-fastest qualifier. Ramirez also owns the Mighty Invictus colt with Larry and Michelle Rice.
Arapahoe Park-based horses defended home field with the top three qualifying spots.
Slump Buster, a Walk Thru Fire maiden whose previous six races were at Los Alamitos Race Course in Southern California, finished second to Built Tuff Enough and posted the fourth-fastest qualifying time of :19.772.
