With a little bit of luck thanks to a clean trip and a significant amount of talent, the fast-improving Feature Mr Lucky prevailed by a nose in a four-horse photo in Saturday’s $132,883 Sunland Park Winter Derby (G2). Although the Feature Mr Jess gelding came into the race with only a maiden victory to his credit, the California-bred ran perhaps the best race of his career in the trials when he finished a game second. In the final, he broke well from the rail under jockey Raul Gutierrez and hit the wire in :19.314 for 400 yards. The gelding earned a paycheck of $62,455 for owner Jose Saul Medina and trainer Jaime Dominguez.

Bred by Vinewood Farms out of the stakes-placed Corona Cartel mare Mimi Cartel, Feature Mr Lucky began his career at Los Alamitos where he broke his maiden last December at the $12,500 claiming level. As a 3-year-old, he came into the Winter Derby with a record of 5-0-2-0, which contributed to his odds of 19-1. His career record now stands at 9-2-3-0 with earnings of $73,833.

Billy Smith’s Distant Fury, a filly by FDD Dynasty who ran in last year’s Rainbow Futurity (G1), took second with Linda Joiner and Marty Cope’s ICU Deity, an FDD Dynasty gelding who finished second in this year’s West Texas Derby (G3), in third.
