The second- and third-place finishers in the Sam Houston Futurity (G2) – Glimpse Of Dash and Quic Carter – top the $278,000 Firecracker Futurity (G2) on the Fourth of July and then Old South Derby winner Separatist Firstdown heads the $138,000 Firecracker Derby on the following night at Delta Downs.
While Jaime Flores’ Glimpse Of Dash (Glimpse Of Greatness-Double Dash Queen by Moon Shine Dash) and Marina Nino’s Quic Carter (Carters Cartel-Quic Jess by Separatist) did not win the $563,950 Sam Houston Futurity (G2), there is no shame in their defeat since they were beaten by Kiss My Hocks, the No. 1 horse in the AQHA Racing-Horseplayernow.com National Poll.
The Homer Garza-trained Glimpse Of Dash came back in his Firecracker Futurity trial to win by one-half length with the second-fastest time of :17.419 for 350 yards.
Quic Carter, trained by Juan Saucedo, won his maiden at Delta Downs after his third-place run in the Sam Houston Futurity. The gelding stepped forward in his Firecracker Futurity trial to win by 1 1/2 lengths with the fastest time of :17.392 from the six trials.
Oscar Canales Ramirez and Isidro Flores’ Separatist Firstdown (Separatist-Shesa Firstdown Jess by First Down Dash) stands out in the Firecracker Derby with 10 wins, including four stakes victories, from 15 outs. The Flores-trained colt has been favored in his latest seven starts and the odds-on choice in six of those races.
Two starts ago he was the half-length winner of the $62,810 Old South Derby at 3-5 odds and then won his Firecracker Derby trial by the same margin at 4-5 odds. His time of :19.567 for 400 yards was the top mark from a pair of Firecracker Derby trials.
Mary Thompson’s The Eagle Express (One Famous Eagle-Rustys Quickid by Royal Quick Dash) won the other trial by one-half length as the 4-5 choice. The Larry Kopycinski-trained gelding won his maiden in his final 2013 start and has added three wins from five starts this year.
