January 7, 2012

First Blazin Love outran his 9-1 odds and status as the ninth-fastest qualifier to capture Saturday’s $286,364 Shue Fly Stakes (RG2) for 3-year-old New Mexico-breds. The colt by Chicks A Blazin covered 400 yards at Sunland Park in :19.155 and won by a half-length with G.R. Carter Jr. aboard for trainer Paul Jones.

Owned by Johnny C. Martinez, Lisa Saumell and D. Johnson, First Blazin Love picked up his fourth win in five starts and first stakes victory. Last year the colt won trials to the Mountain Top (R) and Zia (RG1) futurities but did not qualify for a final until his victory in a Shue Fly trial. He entered the Shue Fly with a bankroll of $11,000 and picked up another $134,591 for the win.

Bred by Mike Abraham, First Blazin Love is the second stakes winner out of the First Down Dash mare Love At First Glance, who also produced 2007 John Deere Northwest Distaff Challenge winner Love To Finish First. First Blazin Love is the 22nd stakes winner sired by Chicks A Blazin, and this victory helped push his sire’s lifetime progeny earnings over the $11-million mark.

SM Cattle Export Company and Jaime Dominguez’s Fury Of The Storm, a colt by Furyofthewind, got up to finish second. Sue May and David Barrett’s PK Bay, a Brookstone Bay gelding, just edged out favorite, fastest qualifier and two-time stakes winner Call Me A Blazn Chic for third.
