Owned and trained by Laurie Ferguson, First Prize Beach got her second win in three starts Saturday when she returned as the fastest qualifier to defeat Dream Catch Her by a head in the $20,711(US) Bank of America/Rocky Mountain Turf Club Maiden Challenge at Lethbridge, Alberta.
Under jockey Tyler Walker, the 3-year-old daughter of First Prize Perry completed the 350 yards in :18.120 to pick up the winner's check of $9,942, boosting her career total to $12,983. Bobby D. Cox bred the sorrel miss in Oklahoma from the Separatist mare Private Beach.
Dream Catch Her earned $4,246 for owner/trainer Dean Frey. The California-bred daughter of Snowbound (TB) from the First Down Dash mare Counting The Dreams was ridden by Ruben Saenz. Anita Bramlette bred the $13,520 earner.
Making only her second career start, New Mexico-bred Jessa Merlot finished third again for owner Ralph E. Denard. Also trained by Laure Ferguson, the Jesse James Jr filly picked up $2,072 for the effort. MJ Farms bred Jessa Merlot from the Dash Ta Fame mare Marilyn Merlot. Danielle DiBert had the riding assignment.
Completing the field were Sailin Separate Ways, Speediac, CR Longmayurun and Perry Famous. Invisible Wagon was scratched.
