August 29, 2012

Trial winners and the top two qualifiers, Follys Fast and Givemesumcorona, each face the biggest test of their careers when they start in the $60,000 Bank of America Emerald Downs Challenge at Emerald Downs on Sunday afternoon.

The Eloy Mendoza-owned and -trained Follys Fast (Separatist-Sixes Folly by Mr Jess Perry) does have stakes credentials, a second in the 2010 $25,000 Corona Chick Handicap at Los Alamitos, but started in a conditioned $10,000 claiming race in his start before his Bank of America Emerald Downs Challenge trial. In that Arapahoe Park 350-yard race, he finished second at 2-1 odds.

Follys Fast moved up in his Bank of America Emerald Downs Challenge trial when he sped to a half-length win with a :22.094 time for the 440 yards, the fastest time from the two trials.

Juvencio Gallegos-Reymundo’s Givemesumcorona (Stel Corona-Sumclassndash by First Down Dash) won his maiden in his 11th career start with his Bank of America Emerald Downs Challenge trial win at 18-1 odds. The Dayson Lavanway-trained gelding won his trial by 1 1/2 lengths in :22.114.

Bob and Scott Giltner’s A Royal Dervish (Royal Miracle Dip-Three Royal Roses by First Down Dash) was second to Follys Fast in their trial with the third-fastest qualifying time of :22.163 for trainer Kurt Calton.

A Royal Dervish has two wins from four starts this year and was third in last year’s Bank of America Emerald Downs Challenge and third in the Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap (G3) at Los Alamitos.
