In a blanket finish with only heads, necks and noses separating the top seven finishers, Galion prevailed in the $79,280 Mile High Derby on Saturday afternoon at Arapahoe Park near Denver.

Ridden by Esgar Ramirez for owner and trainer Jaime Dominguez, the Texas-bred gelding by Shazoom dueled all the way to the wire and won by a head with a clocking of :19.881 for 400 yards. The sorrel gelding earned $31,712 for the win and pushed his career total to $61,563. Galion won his trial on August 3 with the fifth-fastest qualifying time, and this victory, which was the fifth of his career, marked his first stakes win. Jerry Windham bred Galion out of the Runaway Winner mare Winning Flair.

Ralph and Carolyn Fales’ Block N Tackle, a Tac It Like A Man gelding who won the Rocky Mountain Derby earlier in the meet, just missed the victory and earned $15,858 for running second to increase his earnings to $150,343.

The PYC Paint Your Wagon gelding Top Gun B, who won last year’s Sunland Park Winter Futurity (G2), got up to take third for Junior’s Quarter Horses Inc.
