Gene Cox’s morning-line favorite Gettin Famous in the $46,200 Sunshine State Derby at 400 yards and Reynaldo Guzman’s sharp Jesses First Moon in the $20,000 AQHA Maiden Challenge over 300 yards start closing weekend of the Hialeah Park season Saturday afternoon.
Gettin Famous (One Famous Eagle-TMF Asgoodasitgets by Strawfly Special) has been established as the 3-1 morning-line choice after a second-place run back in December and an impressive maiden win in his two starts at Hialeah Park. The gelding won his maiden in his fifth out by a half length as the 9-5 favorite.
Trained by Donnie Strickland, Gettin Famous qualified for the $106,722 Governor’s Stakes last fall at Hoosier Park after finishing a close second in his trial.
Alicia Smith’s AHS Ironsmash (Gridiron-Smashingly Beautiful by Eternal Jet Stream) makes his Hialeah debut after winning two of four career starts, each at Delta Downs. The Matt Frazier-trained gelding won a maiden race and then came back to fight for a nose win in a non-winners-of-two allowance race.
The Sergio Concepcion-trained Jesses First Moon (My First Moon-Jesses Playmate by Mr Jess Perry) heads the AQHA Maiden Challenge after winning his latest two starts at Hialeah. He started 2013 with a maiden win by 1 1/4 lengths and then rallied for a head win on a $15,000 optional-claiming race.
Cesar Rosales’ Dash Master Jess (Mr Jess Perry-Dash Master Miss by Dash For Destiny) took a maiden race on January 13 at Hialeah and then was beaten by just a nose in a second-level allowance race for trainer Rolando Almanza.
