Heavily favored Im Royal Quick ran to his 2-5 odds on Sunday as he rolled to an easy 4 ½-length victory in the $55,090 King Rick Rack Stakes at Zia Park. The California-bred gelding by Royal Quick Dash jumped out to an early two-length lead in the 870-yard contest and cruised home with a clocking of :45.155 under jockey Alejandro Medellin.

Trained by Ramon Ronquillo and owned by Jose G. Orquiz and Anna Garcia, Im Royal Quick won for the seventh time in 30 starts and picked up his second stakes win after taking the Herman Jefferson Stakes (G3) at Zia in October. Bred by Manuel Carmona Jr. out of the Merridoc mare Im Brendas Baby, 6-year-old Im Royal Quick had only modest success in his first three years racing on the straightaway but has finished first or second in seven of nine starts around the turn. His earnings now stand at $155,370.

Tony Sedillo’s D E Wagons Strawfly finished second in his stakes debut. Brookstone Flash, who finished second in the 440-yard New Mexico Classic Derby (RG2) last year, got up to take third.

The King Rick Rack is named for the distance specialist who won 23 of 74 career starts, including 11 stakes events.
