In a very tight finish in which the first eight horses were separated by margins of noses and necks, Currie Maben’s homebred Jess Rueben James prevailed at the wire to break his maiden in the $65,000 New Mexico Breeders' Stakes (RG2) on Sunday at SunRay Park. Ridden by Larry Gamez for trainer Jaime Aldavaz Jr., the gelding by Jesse James Jr won by a neck and stopped the timer at :19.508 in the 400-yard contest for 3-year-old New Mexico-breds. He paid $19 to win as the sixth choice in the wagering.

Although Jess Rueben James was a maiden entering the starting gate, he did finish second in the Animas Stakes last time out at SunRay and had hit the board six other times. His record now stands at 11-1-4-3 with earnings of $86,671.

Favored Sandys Jesse, a two-time stakes winner this year also by Jesse James Jr, had an early lead and held on for second. The filly pushed her bankroll to $170,115 for owner Chin Lee.

Olivas Racing’s You Sexy Fame, a gelding by Dash Ta Fame, closed to take third in her stakes debut.
