'Jetblack' Headlines TQHA Trials

Filly puts up fast time to take top spot in rich futurity at Retama Park.

Retama Park held 10 trials on Friday night for the $425,000-estimated TQHA Sale Futurity (RG2), and Mercy Hinklin Horse Farm LLC’s homebred Jetblack Gold Moment stamped herself as the horse to beat with an impressive two-length victory in :17.454 to set the fastest qualifying time. The daughter of Jet Black Patriot earned a 109 speed index for her 350-yard dash with Danny Lavergne up for trainer Kenneth Roberts Sr. The race is restricted to graduates of the TQHA Yearling Sale.

This marked the fifth career start for Jetblack Gold Moment and third victory after she broke her maiden in a trial for the Harrah’s Entertainment Futurity (G3) and scored an allowance win at Delta Downs. She also finished second in the Harrah’s Entertainment Futurity final and fourth in a trial for the Heritage Place Futurity (G1). Her earnings now stand at $51,156.

Jetblack Gold Moment is out of the Royal Quick Dash mare Royally Streak, who finished third in the 2008 TQHA Sale Futurity (then RG1 at Sam Houston Race Park), and she could become the first stakes winner sired by freshman stallion Jet Black Patriot, a two-time RG1 winner who finished second in the 2008 All American Futurity (G1).

Rafael Rodriguez Pantoja’s Mystical Cartel RR won the fifth heat and put up the second-fastest qualifying time of :17.472. Bred by Bielau Oaks, the daughter of Carters Cartel picked up her third career win and will make her stakes debut in the final. Santos Carrizales piloted the gray filly for trainer Eusevio Huitron.

The third-fastest time went to Tommy Hays and Charles Forbes Jr.’s One Eyed Eagle, a One Famous Eagle filly who won the eighth trial in :17.508. That marked the first victory for the Texas-bred, who earlier qualified to the Sam Houston Futurity (G2).
