Abigail Kawananakoa’s pair of Mesa Moonlight and Pretty Lethal should be a dangerous for trainer Paul Jones in the $25,000 La Pacifica Handicap for sophomore fillies over 350 yards at Los Alamitos on Saturday night.
Mesa Moonlight (FDD Dynasty-Nagano Moon by Major Rime) is in improving form after winning a 330-yard allowance race by three quarters of a length on April 6, her first start in four months. The half-sister to champion First Moonflash won her maiden at first asking and her Ed Burke Million trial from five starts last year.
Pretty Lethal (First Down Dash-Lethal Delight by Dean Miracle) did not start until last December and came through with a win in her first start. After a horrendous start in her Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes trial, she came back to finish second by a nose in a non-winners-of-two allowance race and then won at that level in her most recent effort as the odds-on favorite.
Felix Gonzalez’s A Mere Diva (Foose-A Mere Classic by A Classic Dash) has won three of her six starts with a second-place finish in the $35,000 Autumn Handicap in her sole stakes effort. She returns after a fifth-place finish in her Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1) trial in January.
