April 6, 2013

Joe Rios and Nahum Prieto’s Kia Won held on for a nose victory in Saturday’s $50,000 New Mexican Spring Fling Stakes (R) at Sunland Park and became the first stakes winner sired by champion Ketel Won. Ridden by L. Salvador Martinez for trainer Eduardo Gonzalez, the 2-year-old colt prevailed by a nose with a 300-yard clocking of :14.939.

Kia Won finished third in his career debut in a trial to the New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) and was not fast enough to advance to the final but did qualify to the Spring Fling. The colt, who was bred by Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Jones out of the Major Rime mare Major Kia, has earned $30,850 in his two starts.

Kia Won’s sire, Ketel Won, earned three Grade 1 victories and three champion titles during his career. The Stoli stallion stands at Hart Farms in Kaplan, Louisiana.

SMS Racing LLC’s Jess Corona Jr, a colt by Jesse James Jr, closed to finish second. Kaydns Krusader, a gelding by Sixes Royal running for J and M Racing and Farm, crossed the wire third.
