Melvin Neugebauer’s Here Kittykittykitty scored a game victory in Sunday’s $85,242 Mesilla Valley Speed Handicap (RG2) at Sunland Park to capture the New Mexico-bred stakes for the second time in his career. The 7-year-old Genuine Strawfly gelding won the race in 2012 and finished fourth in last year’s renewal.
This time around, Here Kittykittykitty dueled from gate to wire and prevailed by a head as the 6-5 favorite. Larry Gamez rode for trainer Wes Giles and got the 350-yard distance in :17.298. Here Kittykittykitty, who was bred by Jay and Mary Lou Standefer, has now won 10 of 25 starts with earnings of $664,824. His current win streak stands at four after victories in an allowance race and the Namehimastreaker New Mexico Classic Cup Championship (RG1) at Zia Park and the Jess Burner Memorial Handicap (RG1) at Sunland to end his 2013 campaign.
Hector Cardenas’ Sandys Jesse, a three-time stakes winner last year, finished a game second with Veronica Ramirez’s Stel Gone Corona, the runner-up in last year’s Mesilla ‘Cap, in third.
