Macias Performance Horses’ Kool Angel scored a mild upset on Saturday as she held off even-money favorite Rylees Boy to capture the $50,000 KOFX Radio Handicap (G3) at Sunland Park. With Esgar Ramirez in the irons for trainer Paul Jones, the 4-year-old daughter of First N Kool prevailed by a neck with a clocking of :17.297 for 350 yards.
Sent off as the 3-1 second choice in the wagering, First N Kool extended her winning streak to three after previously taking a trial and the final of the $135,616 Sunland Park Winter Derby (G2) in December. Her earnings now stand at $120,830 with five wins in 13 starts.
Kool Angel, who was bred in Utah by Kapp Investment Company LLC out of the Proudest Effort mare Angels Best Effort, failed to find the winner’s circle in her first four career starts in her home state. She made her fifth and final start as a 2-year-old at the Elko County Fair in Nevada and completed the season with earnings of just $485. But she really blossomed as a 3-year-old after breaking her maiden for a $10,000 claiming tag at SunRay Park. She also won an allowance contest before taking the Winter Derby to end her sophomore year.
Gerardo Ochoa’s Rylees Boy, a 7-year-old gelded son of Heza Motor Scooter, put in a game effort under Joe Ruiz but could not beat Kool Angel to the wire. A two-time Grade 1 winner with earnings of more than $700,000, Rylees Boy once started for a $6,250 claiming price and has now hit the board in 26 consecutive races.
Buildemhigh, a Feature Mr Jess stallion running for Edilberto Estrada, finished a close third, just a head behind Rylees Boy.
