Kool Shazoom Wins Canada Cup Futurity

First N Kool filly earns first stakes win and stays perfect in third career start.

Shaun Jeffrey’s Kool Shazoom kept her perfect record intact with a nose victory in Sunday’s $67,362 Canada Cup Futurity (RG3) at the Rocky Mountain Turf Club in Lethbridge, Alberta. With Logun Gotham riding for trainer Laurie Ferguson at odds of 12-1, Kool Shazoom hit the wire in :17.97 for 350 yards.

Bred in Alberta by Highland Park Racing Partners, Kool Shazoom broke her maiden at first asking at Evergreen Park and then scored by 2 ¼ lengths in her Canada Cup trial. She has now earned $33,529 with three wins in as many starts.

Ralph Danard’s Miracle Recovery, a colt by Dean Miracle, finished a game second as the longest shot in the field at odds of 23-1. Odds-on favorite and fastest qualifier KR Working Man, who won the Bonnett-Bondon Futurity at Evergreen Park, rallied to take third.

Also on the card, Cecil Wiest’s CR Lil Bit Of Ivory dominated the $22,702 Canada Cup Derby (R) with a two-length victory under jockey Teagan Oulton. The Alberta-bred gelding by Ivory James clocked 400 yards in :20.03 for his first stakes win. His record now stands at 12-4-2-5 with earnings of $35,328. Allen Goodsell trains and Dean and Jacque Johnson bred the winner out of the Royal Quick Dash mare A Quick Glance.
