After 42 career starts and five years of racing, the 6-year-old mare L Bar D Snow Princes became a stakes winner for the first time on Sunday when she took the $25,020 Merial Sun Downs Distaff Challenge at the Washington track. With Hugo Herrera aboard at odds of 7-1 for trainer Donald Young and owner Gerardo Sanguino of Umatilla, Oregon, the daughter of This Snow Is Royal rallied to a three-quarter length win in :19.58 for 400 yards. She picked up a check for $11,759, plus a berth in the $125,000 Merial Distaff Challenge Championship (G1) on October 27 at Prairie Meadows.
Bred in Oregon by Linda and Darrell Sanders, L Bar D Snow Princes has won six of 42 lifetime starts with 10 seconds and five thirds and a bankroll of $46,382. Her only other black-type placing was a second-place finish in the $15,500 Jack Rhoden Memorial Handicap in 2010 at the Crooked River Roundup. Since that race she has run primarily at Portland Meadows and Emerald Downs.
Donald Young also saddled runner-up Just A Rumor for owner Adrian Gallegos. Gary Chumbley’s EZ Gamer, who has never finished off the board with 10 wins in 15 career starts, took third. LDS Amazing Grace checked in seventh as the 9-5 favorite.
