Los Al Super Derby Trials on Tap
Sophomore stars to line up in Los Alamitos Super Derby trials.
October 12, 2012
Trials to West Coast racing’s richest derby will highlight a tremendous night of action on Sunday at Los Alamitos. A total of 29 sprinters will compete in four trials to the Grade 1, $993,000 Los Alamitos Super Derby with the top 10 qualifiers moving on to the finale on Saturday, November 3. The Super Derby winner will earn around $400,000 for winning the 400-yard race and will also collect an automatic berth to the December 15, $750,000 Champion of Champions (G1).
The lineup of horses in the opening trial could easily be confused for a field in a Grade 1 final. The seven horses include Grade 1 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap winner Flame N Flash, Governor’s Cup Derby winner Terrific Synergy, Golden State Derby winner Check My Thoughts, Golden State Derby runner-up Do You Do Corona, PCQHRA Breeders Derby finalists Carne Vino and Feature Jessie Gail and the royally-bred FDD Moon.
Owned by Robert Williams and trained by Juan Aleman, Flame N Flash is one of four horses to have already earned a Champion of Champions berth. The La Primera Del Ano Derby winner earned her berth when she defeated older mares in the Mildred Vessels, a race that Aleman considered prep for these trials. Flame N Flash took full advantage of the opportunity in the Millie Vessels and could really put herself in contention for year-end national championship honors with great efforts in this race and in the Super Derby final. Francisco Rubio will ride the 2010 Los Alamitos Equine Sale graduate.
Pat Guthrie and Billy Smith’s Terrific Synergy was considered by many California’s top 3-year-old after a dominant 1 ¾ length victory in the Governor’s Cup Derby on July 28. He came out of that race in such great form that he was then picked by many as the main threat to World Champion Cold Cash 123 in the Go Man Go Handicap on September 23. Terrific Synergy never got going in the Go Man Go and instead finished a closing fifth to Cold Cash 123. Trainer Cody Joiner and jockey G.R. Carter will look to get Terrific Synergy back on the right track with a good effort in this event.
Ed Allred’s Check My Thoughts ran lights out in winning the Golden State Derby and his record shows top three finishes in all 10 of his career starts. The son of Check Him Out has won two other stakes races in those starts and the 400-yard distance is perfect for his skills.
Allred will be represented by Kool Million in the second trial and he comes in having never finished below second place in six starts. Half of those outings have resulted in stakes wins, including a victory in the Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes, a hard-fought victory in the Dillingham Handicap and a daylight win in the Jens List Memorial Stakes. Jose Flores will saddle the son of Bono Jazz. Shane O’Leary’s Deniro, second in the Los Alamitos Winter Derby earlier this season, and Golden State Derby finalist Delight At Night will also compete in this trial.
The third trial offers another blockbuster lineup headed by Adequan California Derby winner Tres Of Linda and Last To Fire, who finished second in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity and third in the Golden State Million Futurity in 2011. Other notable runners in this trial include Vandy’s Flash Handicap winner A Mere Dynasty and Golden State Derby third place finisher Zoomdasher.
All American Derby runner-up Hez Our Secret and Mimi Wells’ New Look, who was super impressive in winning the El Primero Del Ano Derby earlier this year, are the names that pop out of the page in the fourth and final trial. Racing for Johnny Trotter, Hez Our Secret was only behind champion Ochoa in the $2,235,000 All American Derby final. The son of First Down Dash had a great visit to Los Alamitos last fall, as he qualified to the Two Million Futurity. Trotter won this race with partners Burnett Ranches LLC with the outstanding fresh stallion One Famous Eagle. Pat Hyland Handicap runner-up Hi On The List is another name to watch in this trial.
