November 3, 2013

Sue Fikes’ homebred Loves Brown Sugar continued her winning ways on the Texas racing circuit on Saturday with a nose victory in the $25,000 B.F. Phillips Jr. Stakes (RG3) at Lone Star Park. The race was originally scheduled for last week but was postponed due weather. The Texas-bred stakes was re-drawn and lost champion Prospect To The Top, which opened the door for Loves Brown Sugar to take over the favorite’s role at odds of 8-5.

Ridden by Cesar Zuniga for trainer Kie Mushinski, the 4-year-old daughter of Prime Talent got the 400-yard distance in :19.661 for her fifth win in six starts this year. Her only defeat this season was a close sixth in the $75,000 Refrigerator Handicap (G1) at Lone Star. Prior to that, she won three stakes at Retama Park and an allowance contest at Sam Houston Race Park. All told, her record stands at 21-8-6-3 with earnings of $101,615.

Michael Amburn’s Jess A Comment put in a game effort to finish second and earn his fourth stakes-placing of the year. Sure Shot B, winner of the Texas Classic Futurity (G1) last year for owners Tommy Hayes and Charles Forbes Jr., took third.
